Help Us Clear the Shelters
Operation Freedom Ride is joining NBC & Telemundo's Clear The Shelters — the nationwide adoption campaign that's helped more than one million pets find homes since 2015. Adoption specials run all August long — our event page has the details, in-person event days, and the pets waiting to meet you.
Our Mission
Every year 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are killed by euthanasia in the US. It's our mission to help these loving animals find the right person to love and care for them. We founded our organization out of a passion to do something about this problem and the joy of seeing new bonds created. Together we can make an incredible difference.
About Us
Operation Freedom Ride is a Rochester, NY-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal rescue dedicated to saving the lives of homeless dogs and cats. As a 100% volunteer-run, foster-based organization, we rescue animals from local shelters, owner surrenders, and overcrowded southern shelters, providing them with the medical care, love, and support they need until they find their forever homes. Through adoption, fostering, volunteering, and community partnerships, we're committed to giving every animal a second chance and helping build a more compassionate community.

How to Meet Our Pets
Because Operation Freedom Ride is a foster-based rescue, our dogs and cats live in loving foster homes rather than a shelter. There are two great ways to meet our adoptable pets:
Meet Us at an Adoption Event
We regularly host adoption events throughout the Rochester area where you can meet many of our adoptable dogs, chat with volunteers and learn more about our rescue. These events are a great opportunity to interact with our dogs in a fun, relaxed setting and ask questions about the adoption process. (Our cats remain in their foster homes, as they are generally more comfortable meeting potential adopters in a quieter environment.)
If you meet a dog at one of our adoption events and decide you'd like to move forward, you'll still need to complete an adoption application and participate in a private meet and greet. This one-on-one visit allows you to spend more time with the dog outside of the event environment and helps ensure they're the right fit for your family and lifestyle.
Apply to Adopt & Schedule a Meet and Greet
If you're interested in a specific dog or cat, the best way to meet them is by submitting an adoption application. Once your application is approved, an Adoption Coordinator will contact you to arrange a private meet and greet at the foster's home. This personalized approach allows you to get to know the pet in a low-stress environment and helps us ensure the best possible match for both the animal and your family.
