About Us

Parma Animal Shelter’s History

Parma Animal Shelter began as a small, community‑driven effort created by volunteers who wanted to give local animals the safety and compassion they weren’t receiving elsewhere. It grew from donated supplies and grassroots commitment into a trusted cornerstone of animal welfare in Parma and the surrounding communities.

Over time, the shelter expanded its programs, strengthened medical and behavioral care, and built structured protocols that ensure fairness, safety, and consistency for every animal. Volunteers became the foundation of daily operations, providing hands‑on care, adoption support, and the steady compassion that defines the shelter’s identity.

Today, Parma Animal Shelter continues its mission to protect, heal, and find permanent homes for animals through responsible rescue, community partnership, and humane sheltering practices.

Adoption Process

🐾 Our Adoption Process
1. Submit an Adoption Application
Start by completing our adoption application so we can learn about your home, lifestyle, and what kind of dog or cat would be the best match.

2. Application Review
Our team reviews each application to ensure a safe, appropriate placement. Once approved, you may visit through walk‑ins or schedule an optional appointment with an adoption counselor.

3. Meet Our Dogs and Cats
Walk‑ins: Open to everyone during public hours.

Appointments: Not required — but approved adopters may book a dedicated meet‑and‑greet with an adoption counselor.

Adoption Events: Held throughout the year and open to all visitors.

4. Finalizing the Adoption
An adoption counselor will review medical history, complete the paperwork, and guide you through next steps. All animals go home spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.

Special Programs & Areas Served

Special Programs: What Makes Parma Animal Shelter Unique
1. A Fully Volunteer‑Driven Model
PAS is staffed by volunteers who handle daily care, enrichment, cleaning, adoption counseling, fostering, events, and community outreach. This structure is unusual among shelters and creates a deeply community‑rooted identity.

2. Strong, Structured Humane Protocols
The shelter emphasizes:

stress‑free, healthy environments for animals

emergency and wellness medical care

spay/neuter for all animals to reduce overpopulation

microchipping and vaccination before adoption
These consistent standards set PAS apart from many small municipal shelters.

3. A Mission Grounded in Education and Prevention
PAS actively educates the public about spay/neuter, humane treatment, and responsible pet ownership. This educational focus is a core part of its mission and community outreach.

4. Community Partnership and Transparency
The shelter’s mission emphasizes fairness, collaboration, and clear communication with adopters and the public — values that shape its adoption counseling, volunteer training, and public-facing programs.

5. Lifesaving Care for Hard‑to‑Adopt Animals
PAS provides permanent foster homes, special diets, and extensive veterinary care for animals with medical needs — even when costs exceed adoption fees. This commitment to high‑needs animals is a defining feature.
