Our Mission

At the Humane Rescue Alliance, we honor more than 150 years of commitment to protecting animals, supporting families, and advocating for positive change to create a world where all animals can thrive. HRA aims to enrich the humanity of their communities by promoting compassion and encouraging people to find joy, comfort, and companionship through the love and appreciation of animals.

About Us

With a people-focused, community-based approach, we treat every animal as an individual and emphasize specialized care for both animals and their families. Through our two campuses in the District of Columbia and New Jersey, we are the largest animal services provider in our region – touching the lives of tens of thousands of animals annually through direct rescue, care, and community-based services. Our teams find solutions to both small and big problems, from providing direct care to an animal in crisis to tackling systemic barriers to affordable, pet-friendly housing.

How to Meet Our Pets

Walk in to our shelter (71 Oglethorpe St NW) during our open hours (12pm-7pm) and view available animals, meet them, complete adoption counseling, sign & pay, and go home same-day!

For animals in foster care, email their foster parent to set up a meet-and-greet. After a successful meet-and-greet, submit an adoption application and wait for staff to reach out. Staff will conduct an adoption interview over the phone with you and provide you details and next steps.
