Our Mission

MHF rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes animals in need and promotes animal welfare through community outreach and humane education. We accomplish our mission through our various programs: intake and adoption, Trap-Neuter-Return, food assistance, humane education, internships, and volunteerism.

About Us

Middleburg Humane Foundation operates a non-profit, 23-acre farm shelter located on the west side of Marshall, Virginia, just off Route 66, exit 27. We provide a haven for animals in need, large and small. In 2023, we served over 1000 animals, from small pocket pets to livestock and equine. We do not receive government funding, therefore we depend on our fundraising efforts throughout the community. MHF also operates a Grooming Salon and Furchandise Boutique (deeply discounted pet supplies) in our beautiful facility at 5000 Cunningham Farm Drive in rural Marshall. Resale Boutique Shop on Main Street in Marshall to generate revenue.

Adoption Process

Bringing a new pet into your home is an exciting and meaningful decision, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

The first step is getting to know the animals in our care. You can browse our available pets on our website or visit the shelter during open hours to meet them in person. We care for a wide variety of animals — including dogs, cats, horses, and small companion animals — all waiting for loving, permanent homes. Our team is always happy to introduce you and answer questions about their personalities, history, and needs.

When you find an animal you’re interested in, you’ll complete an adoption application either online or at the shelter. This application helps us learn more about your household, lifestyle, and experience with animals so we can ensure the best possible match. Our staff carefully reviews each application and may follow up if we need clarification or additional information.

Once your application is approved, we’ll schedule a meet-and-greet so you can spend quality time with the animal you’re considering. This step is important for building a connection and making sure it feels like the right fit. If you currently have pets at home, we may ask you to bring them along so we can help ensure a successful introduction.

In certain cases — such as with horses or animals with special needs — a home visit may be required to confirm the environment is safe and appropriate. Our team works with you to arrange a convenient time if this step is necessary.

After you’ve found your perfect match, you’ll complete the adoption paperwork and pay the adoption fee. Adoption fees help offset the cost of veterinary care, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, and daily care provided while the animal was with us. You’ll also receive your new pet’s medical records and helpful information to support a smooth transition.

Finally, it’s time to bring your new family member home. We provide guidance and resources to help make those first days and weeks successful, and our support doesn’t end there. We’re always available to answer questions, offer advice, and celebrate updates as your newest companion settles in.

Our goal is to create lasting, successful adoptions — for both you and the animals we serve.
