Lovebirds can be lovely, cuddly, and curious but can pack a big personality into their small little body. Primarily native to Africa, lovebirds can range in size from about 5 - 6½” and can live up to 12-15 years with proper nutrition and care. These little birds can be a chatty bunch, singing and whistling throughout the day, but most commonly at dusk and dawn. They are not known for mimicking human speech but with patience and plenty of effort can be trained to perform other tricks. We recommend that lovebirds live in pairs or groups whenever possible. Lovebirds tend to thrive in pairs as their name implies. We recommend a cage that is at least 27”x24” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ½” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of perches, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. We do not recommend a seed only diet as it can lead to malnutrition and other potential issues, please consult your vet for specific diet recommendations.The needs of each lovebird are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the lovebird you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff!
