Eastern river cooters are hardy and fascinating pets. These aquatic turtles can live up to 40 years with proper care. They require a minimum tank size of 75 gallons, but they would thrive best in a pond set up. They have a shell designed for deep swimming. They need water heated to 70-80 degrees. They love to bask and need their basking area to be between 80-90 degrees. They also require UVB light on their basking area. They make for fun, sociable pets that need little handling and can do well with other similar sized turtles. They are also a great option for homes with allergies to pet dander.
