Meet John Adams, a sweet and easygoing Pyr! John was picked up as a stray in Alabama and has quickly become one of the sweetest boys in boarding. He loves being with his people, wants to stay close, and is always ready to lean in for affection. John is wonderfully laid back with people and great on leash. He knows how to sit for a treat and isn't much of a barker or digger. He gets along with all dogs, although his puppy-like enthusiasm when meeting them can sometimes be a little overwhelming for more reserved dogs. He could happily live with a canine companion or be your one-and-only. He has shown no reaction to outdoor cats but has not been exposed to indoor cats.
John is very friendly with new people. He may be a little shy at first but warms up quickly. He hasn't met children, but with his personality, he'd do well with kids around 6 or 7 and older. John has spent his time in an outdoor kennel, so indoor life will be new to him, but his foster believes he'll adjust well with plenty of attention and companionship. He enjoys being brushed and did well riding in the car. His beautiful coat is soft with enough coarse texture to make it easier to maintain and less prone to matting.
Most importantly, John loves his people and affection. His favorite treat is freeze-dried liver, and while he hasn't been offered people food, we suspect he'd be happy to investigate that opportunity! His ideal home would offer a secure 5-foot fenced yard, plenty of companionship, and perhaps a canine or small human friend. He'd also be perfectly content as a leash-walk-only dog. He's not overly active and probably wouldn't be interested in strenuous hiking adventures - he'd much rather be your devoted couch companion. If you're looking for a friendly, affectionate Pyr with a gentle spirit, John Adams is ready to join your family and make his own little place in history!

NYS Registered Non-Profit Rescue # RR102. National Great Pyrenees Rescue (NGPR) has been rescuing and adopting out Great Pyrenees since 2006. Our relationship doesn't end with adoption, as we continue to support adopters throughout the lifetime of their dog.
Our goal is to assess every application on its own merits. Key considerations are: 1) the experience of the applicant with large breed dogs 2) children in the household or regularly visiting the household are ready for a large-breed dog who is a guardian by nature and 3) the sex of other dogs currently residing in the household to avoid same-sex aggression issues. For puppies under six months old, the applicant's ability to socialize the puppy with older dogs is a priority.
