Meet Sammy - a cat who needs compassion more than judgment Sammy is a 5-year-old neutered black male who recently found himself at our shelter after his previous home added a second cat and both began having litter box issues. The other cat was rehomed, Sammy was surrendered, and his life was turned upside down.Sammy is declawed on all four feet, and recent X-rays revealed significant damage that will require surgical repair. Right now, Sammy is living with chronic pain, which explains a lot about his current behavior. He has received a pain injection and is on medication in his food, but these are only short-term measures while we work toward a long-term solution.Because he is hurting and extremely stressed in the shelter environment, Sammy is currently very defensive and does not want to be handled. We are giving him space, moving slowly, and offering treats and wet food, but the shelter is overwhelming for him. His former owner described him as aloof but not aggressive, which strongly suggests he has been uncomfortable for quite some time.Sammy is not a "bad" cat - he is a cat in pain, scared, and trapped in a cage that makes everything worse. What he desperately needs is a quiet foster or adoptive home, ideally with someone experienced, patient, and willing to let him decompress at his own pace. A calm environment and proper medical care could make a world of difference for him. This is not an easy adoption. Sammy is not looking for instant affection or a lap to curl up on - he is looking for understanding, stability, and a chance to heal. If you're someone who believes that the hardest cats are often the ones who need love the most, Sammy may be worth opening your heart (and home) to.If you can help Sammy with fostering or adoption, please reach out. His future depends on someone seeing past his fear and recognizing the cat he could be once he is no longer in pain.If you are interested in adopting this pet, please go to www.midwestpetrefuge.com/adopt to complete an application.
