Lagoon is a three year old neutered male cat, up to date on his vaccinations. Here's what his foster volunteer says about him:
How would you describe the cat's general personality? Lagoon is a sweet boy who takes time to come out of his shell, but is a great companion once he trusts you. It took us nearly a month to gain his trust, but now he enjoys spending time with us and absolutely loves being petted. He is very food driven, and feeding him is the fastest way to strengthen your bond with him. He gets along great with other cats as well as calm, cat-friendly dogs.
Does the cat enjoy being pet? Yes, Lagoon absolutely loves being pet! Keep in mind it will take time before he is comfortable being approached, but after a few weeks he'll start coming over looking for attention. He leans into his pets and purrs the whole time.
If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet? He loves being petted everywhere, but his favorite spots are behind his ears, under his chin, and the base of his tail.
Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched? None that we've noticed!
Does the cat come on your lap? No, he hasn't tried to come onto our laps yet.
Does the cat like to be held? He doesn't exactly like being held, but he does tolerate it. Usually we can pick Lagoon up for about 5 seconds before he starts to squirm.
Does the cat sleep in your bed? No, but it's only been a few days since we started letting him out of his foster room.
Does the cat seek your attention? Yes, Lagoon loves to get attention! He'll usually meow and walk over to us for pets when he's feeling lonely. He'll also often come to us if we call his name and snap our fingers, although this is a recent development that took weeks to build up to.
Does the cat like to play? Not yet with us, but I believe he was playful with his previous fosters. When I pick up a toy while petting him, he usually gets startled and runs away briefly.
How vocal is the cat? He was almost silent for the first few months he lived with us, but since gaining confidence, he is more vocal. He'll meow when he's excited for pets, or if he's done eating and ready to leave his foster room where we feed him.
What kinds of sounds does the cat make? He has a really cute meow, but he'll also purr deeply when he's being pet.
Does the cat scratch a scratcher? We've never seen Lagoon use a scratcher in front of us, but the ones in his room appear to be used.
Does the cat always use the litter box? Yes, Lagoon is always good about using the litter box.
What food and frequency is the cat currently eating? We feed him a healthy portion of dry food in the morning, then one can of Fancy Feast wet food in the evening. He has no dietary restrictions or need for a special diet.
Is the cat picky about food? No, he eats absolutely everything!
What is the cat's favorite treat? His favorites are Churu treats! That is how I got him to come out of his closet to receive pets for the first time. It might take 3-4 weeks before he has the confidence for this though, as Lagoon struggles with transitions.
What medication is the cat on, and how is it administered? Lagoon is not on any medication at this time.
Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances? No Lagoon has never swatted at us. His primary way of showing he's uncomfortable is to hiss, which he did early on if we got too close before he was ready.
Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you? No, Lagoon has never scratched us.
Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you? No, he has never nipped us.
Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)? No Lagoon has never bitten us.
To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful? He has not met any new people since living with us, but my guess is that he would be initially shy and would hide.
If you have observed the cat with other animals, please describe how they get on? He enjoys the company of our two adult female cats as well as our three-year-old Labrador retriever. Introductions and integration were fairly easy, although Lagoon is easily startled. He hissed at our cats a few times when they ran past him, startling him, but this has improved a lot as he gets more comfortable. He likes being around our pets but doesn't directly interact with them or play with them.
Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren't covered by the previous questions? Lagoon has a cute white patch on his chest and a little white highlight on the side of his tail. He loves to be petted and will purr the entire time. When he's really enjoying the petting, he will head butt you to show how happy he is. He's got a cute meow when he's seeking attention, but he's a generally quiet cat.
In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt? Lagoon is a sweet, affectionate boy who enjoys the attention of his humans, even though it takes time for him to trust them. If you enjoy a cat who loves to be petted, Lagoon is your guy! One of his ears has been clipped, which is usually signals that the cat was once outside, although I don't know much about his history. Regardless of his apparently difficult past, he has learned to trust humans, although he is understandably cautious at first. Lagoon is ready for his forever home where he can settle and become comfortable, without the constant change and upheaval he's dealt with his whole life.
What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them? The biggest challenge with Lagoon is his initial shyness and difficulty with transitions. He struggles with change and confinement, so the first few weeks of his adoption will require some patience. He spent nearly the first month he lived with us hiding in the open closet in his foster room, and would hiss if we approached too closely. Through patience and letting Lagoon interact on his own terms, he eventually began coming out of his closet to eat in front of us, and not long after that, he starting enjoying pets from us. Food is definitely the way to Lagoon's heart! Whoever adopts Lagoon will need to understand it will take several weeks before he is entirely comfortable, but the trust that will form is what makes rescuing this cat so rewarding.
