Meet Brisket, the Xolitzcuintli (a Mexican Hairless dog). Brisket came into the Shelter as a stray found in Watsonville. We donât know much about Brisketâs life before the Shelter but staff have observed that, after a brief acclimation period, he has become eager, vocal and wiggly for pets. He is tolerant of handling but still working on walking on leash. Brisket is food motivated, which will help with any positive reinforcement training and bonding with her new family. Brisket has hung out with a small breed female chihuahua and an older border collie. He has been a bit shy around them. Brisket enjoys being outdoors but adopters should be mindful of his lack of hair and how that impacts his skin and overall health. Although Brisket is adorably weird looking and likely to adopt some interest from adopters, we would highly recommend adopters do breed research prior to adoption to ensure they can meet his unique needs. From Friday, May 1st through Sunday May 10th, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is participating in Empty the Shelters. The adoption fee is reduced to $50 for all cats, dogs and rabbits in our care. Empty the Shelters is the nationâs largest funded adoption event centered around helping homeless pets find families by making adoption affordable for prospective pet owners. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering âPawsitivity Bucksâ with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz locationâs Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end âmeet and greetsâ (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If youâd like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
