Meet Deacon⦠This 1-year-old German Shepherd / Belgian Malinois mix is incredibly smart, deeply loyal, and still learning that the world is a safe place. When Deacon first arrived as an owner surrender, everything felt overwhelmingâand he showed it. Fear was his first response. But underneath that fear? Thereâs a truly good boy who just needs time, patience, and the right person to believe in him.Deaconâs past hasnât been perfect. After a frightening incident involving a man, he developed some understandable sensitivitiesâespecially around men and things like hats. Because of that, he can be skittish and unsure in new situations. Loud noises, unfamiliar environments, or too much pressure too fast can make him nervous. But when you give him space and let him come to you? Thatâs when you start to see him soften. With his trusted people, Deacon is a completely different dog. Heâs affectionate, engaged, and eager to connect. He warms up faster when he sees his person interacting comfortably with someone newâhe takes his cues from you. Once youâre âhis,â youâre in his circle for good. And letâs talk about his brain⦠because this boy is SMART. He already knows an impressive list of commands: sit, wait, down, shake, spin, twirl, roll over, heel, middle, orbit, leave it, targetâand more. His favorite game? âHop up!ââheâll proudly jump onto objects to show off his skills. Training has been a huge confidence builder for him, and he thrives when given structure and clear communication.Heâs fully potty trained, crate trained (âgo to jailâ is his cue ), and walks nicely on a gentle leader. He enjoys hikes, loves swimming, and will happily stick close to his personâespecially if you remind him with an âeasy.âDeacon has done well with children in his previous home and has lived around other dogs. He tends to do best with dogs his size or larger (no small dogs under 20 lbs, as he can get a little too excited). Heâs more comfortable with male dogs and can be a bit intrusive with females, so proper introductions and guidance are important.Heâs not food or toy aggressive, has never shown territorial behaviors, and when faced with conflict from other dogs in the past, he chose to retreat rather than escalate. That tells you a lot about his heart.Deacon is also muzzle trained (ânoseâ) and tolerates grooming well with people he trusts. Like many sensitive dogs, he prefers a calm, patient approachâespecially for things like nail trims.Heâs still a work in progress. Heâs not the kind of dog who will thrive in a busy, unpredictable home or with someone expecting an instant social butterfly. What he needs is someone experienced, patient, and willing to let trust build at his pace.Because once it does? Youâre getting a loyal, intelligent, deeply devoted companion who will look to you for everything. The good boy is in thereâweâre already seeing him more and more every day. Deacon is ready for someone who will continue helping him grow, build his confidence, and show him that heâs finally safe.
