02/14/26 This little guy is Blarney! Blarney actually arrived at the shelter as a stray after knocking on his finder's door while wandering outside! No one came forward to claim Blarney, so he is now looking for a new home that can keep him contained. If you are not familiar with hamster care or the recent research into humane standards of care for hamsters, we highly encourage doing your own research prior to adopting. In general, hamsters are not social animals and do not like to be held. Blarney takes this behavior a little too seriously and would prefer to be left alone completely. He is an older hamster at 2-years-old, considering their lifespan is usually 1.5-3 years. So he is just looking for a home to live out his golden years in peace. A large enclosure (like a 40-gal breeder tank) with a lot of enrichment and large 12-inch wheel would help make his remaining time the best it possibly can be! Hamsters are solitary creatures that can run up to 6 miles at night in the wild, so a wheel is an important part of their set up. They are also burrowing animals, so having a part of the enclosure that has at least 10-inch deep burrowing substrate (such as paper bedding) is also important.
