Size: approx. 11-14â longLife span: 20+ years with proper careGroup or Solo: Cockatiels can be kept alone to bond with their human or housed in pairs or in large groups to bond with each other. If kept in groups, it is recommended to separate them by gender.Diet: 60-70%% of their diet should consist of high-quality pelleted food made specifically for Cockatiels. Smaller amounts of fresh veggies can also be added. Fruits and certain seeds should only be given as occasional treats. Provide separate feeders for dry food, fresh food and water. If housing more than one bird, provide multiple feeding stations. Fresh food and water should always be available. Water dishes should be large enough for birds to bathe in. Habitat: The bigger the better for your bird. The minimum size for a habitat should be 24â W x 24â D x 30â H with metal bars spaced no greater than ½â apart. Provide a variety of perches so your cockatiel can exercise their feet and prevent pressure sores from developing. Cockatiels are very intelligent, so they need to mental stimulation. Foraging toys and other size-appropriate toys should be provided. Without proper stimulation, birds get bored and may pick at their feathers or develop other destructive habits, so rotate toys regularly. Ensure toys are strongly attached to the habitat and cannot be ingested. Lighting: Birds need exposure to UV light to make vitamin D in their skin, which allows them to absorb dietary calcium. UV lights designed specifically for birds should shine on the habitat for 10-12hrs a day. Handling: Birds should be allowed out of their habitats and handled daily. It is important when handling to support your birdâs body. Avoid holding your bird too tightly or squeezing it. This can be dangerous and cause injury. Always handle your cockatiel with care and gentleness. . Nails should be trimmed by a qualified person to prevent injury to the bird. Beaks should not need regular trimming unless they have an underlying condition.
