I'M IN FOSTER CARE!
Hello folks- I'm Creature! I'm a 1 year old, Green Iguana looking for my forever home. I am still quite young, so expect me to grow a lot when you bring me home. Since I can grow up to 6 feet in length, I need to go home with someone who has had experience with large reptiles. I am somewhat flighty, so I would love a patient person who will tame me down, because I do enjoy being held once you've gotten me. I'll need to go home to an enclosure at least 18" X 24" X 36", and will need an enclosure at least 6x6 feet when I'm fully grown! If you're ready to share lots of greens and veggies, and shower me in high humidity, we should get along splendidly!
Creature ID#A0967432
Since I'm not at the adoption center, you can make arrangements to meet me by emailing a copy of your completed Adoption Application profile (see below) along with a picture of your enclosure to
[email protected]. You must be 18 or older to submit a profile.
Here are some highlights from my foster family!
Creature is a beloved character at WonderLab and has grown a lot since arriving. He arrived as a wee little guy and is now a full on teenager. He has a healthy appetite and enjoys a rotating variety of fresh greens, vegetables, and occasional fruits from Berkeley Bowl. His staple favorites include collard greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens.
As part of an ongoing project exploring animal cognition and behavior, I've spent a great deal of time observing Creature's routines, preferences, and interactions with his environment. Over time, it has become clear that he is highly aware, attentive, and deeply curious.
Some of the things I've noticed about Creature:
His absolute favorite food appears to be blueberries. While he only gets these as treats, he notices whenever I have placed one in his enclosure, and will often climb down from his perch to search for it, even if it has been partially hidden beneath branches or other objects in his environment
He follows an incredibly consistent daily routine. Like clockwork, nearly every evening around 5:30 PM, he heads down to his favorite sleeping spot- a flat rock at the bottom of his enclosure. He has an adorable sleeping posture and it is sweet that he feels comfortable falling asleep even when I'm around him.
He is extremely visually aware and capable of detecting movement from surprisingly far away. I have often noticed him watching me from 30 feet across the room.
Anything novel in his environment immediately captures his attention, whether it's a new object, a new branch or plant, or other changes within his environment...
Creature's temperament has changed dramatically since his arrival. Initially, he was cautious and somewhat wary of close human interaction. Over time, however, he has become very comfortable with touch and physical proximity. He now tolerates - and often appears to enjoy- being gently pet or stroked. When I rub the side of his neck, he will often close his eyes and lean into my hand...
Over the past several months, I've witnessed a remarkable increase in Creature's confidence, curiosity, and comfort around human caregivers. My experience with him has reinforced the idea that iguanas, given patience, consistency, and respectful care, are capable of forming trusting relationships and becoming highly engaged companions.
