Popeye was left behind locked and abandoned in an apartment after his previous owners decided they didn't need him anymore. He eventually escaped his captivity but his fight wasn't over, he had to learn to live on the street avoiding the other cats, dogs, fast driving cars and, worst of all, the cruel people who wanted to see him suffer. When he was reported to the SAFCC Helpline, our wonderful trapper Sandy arrived quickly to the apartment complex, located Popeye and discovered that he suffered from an eyelid condition called Entropion, which was damaging his eyes. Knowing his vision was deteriorating day by day she acted fast and set up a drop-trap immediately. A resident however had other plans and chased Popeye away from the trap and threatened the trapper because he wanted more kittens. Undeterred, Sandy returned the next day with a partner in tow, but a cold snap with blistering wind had set in, causing Popeye to seek shelter. For the next 3 days they set out with their traps and finally Popeye was caught on the third night they returned!The community came together and raised money for his surgery through fundraising and the SAFCC Cat Crisis Fund. Unfortunately, only one of his eyes could be saved. But during his long recovery it became obvious to everyone that even though he looks tough, Popeye is as sweet as can be! He is thankful every day to be indoors and loves being petted and brushed! He loves other cats and all people! Playtime is his second favorite time of day after dinner! He loves feather toys, catnip balls, or just running around with his roommate.Popeye is estimated to be 3 yrs old and he is now neutered, healthy, and up-to-date on vaccines and preventatives. He is also FIV+, meaning he has a compromised immune system and needs to be an indoor kitty from now on to avoid the risk of him getting sick. FIV is a fairly common feline virus and most indoor cats can still live perfectly normal and healthy average lifespans.
