What kind of home would be best for me? Pongo is looking for a peaceful home, ideally as an only dog, where he can finally exhale and just be. In return, he'll offer quiet loyalty, soft affection, and a grateful heart that knows what it means to be given another chance. Pongo has been tested with cats and was a bit too curious - so no cats for him!
Pongo is great with adults, particularly adults that move at his pace. We were told that in his previous home Pongo guarded his food. In rescue, he eats alone and doesn't have to compete with other dogs. He will growl if another dog comes near his food. Given this, if there are children in the home, they must understand boundaries when dogs are eating and give Pongo his space. Hey, we don't like to share food either!
What is my personality like? Born on July 17, 2017, Pongo's journey has been one of quiet resilience and second chances. On January 2, 2026, he arrived at the poodle farm after his previous owner exhausted every option trying to find him a new home in New Jersey. When no one came forward, we stepped in - grateful to help - and brought Pongo all the way to South Carolina so his story wouldn't end there but begin again.
Pongo was surrendered because he was believed to struggle with other dogs. What we've discovered is something very different. Pongo isn't aggressive at all - he's simply scared. Other dogs make him uncomfortable, and it's clear he feels safest when he doesn't have to compete for space or attention. With people, though, he shines. He craves calm, gentle companionship and blossoms when he feels secure and loved.
This sweet boy is kind, friendly, and wonderfully laid-back. He's a bit of a lazy soul who truly appreciates life's simple pleasures - especially food (and yes, it shows!). Pongo would benefit from a gentle walking routine to help him shed a little middle-aged "spread," but he's already house-trained and delights in playing with toys when the mood strikes.
How do I act when I first meet new people? Pongo has a quiet, gentle demeanor. He greets new faces gently.
Other tips and tidbits: Pongo's birthday is 7/2/2017
House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
