Special Needs? Scruffy is neutered, up to date on core vaccines and heartworm tested/negative and on prevention. He is a poster child for what happens when a dog's teeth are not cared for. Our vet extracted 22 teeth due to advanced periodontal disease. Dogs have 42 teeth total - 20 had already fallen out from no care. He has some eye discharge but that is resolving with good grooming. We're unsure if it was from the infection around his teeth (which lead to the nasal cavities and the eyes), from allergies, or from not being groomed routinely. Plan to gently wipe his eyes out daily. It's good for him.

Fence needed? No - Please note, Scruffy has no experience living without a fenced in yard. He is accustomed to pottying on pee pads in the house. He does NOT yet know leash walks or potty outside with a human standing attached to him. He will learn but he does not know it now. He does have a tendency to find holes and weak spots in fences so even with a fenced in yard, he needs watched until he has bonded to you and chosen you as his own.
What kind of home would be best for me? Scruffy is looking for a home, a lap and maybe a purse to call his own. He's always been one of many, but he has always been the smallest of the many. I do not see him playing with other dogs much. He is more content to be by himself and I think would thrive as either someone's one and only or one of two with the other dog being a very laid-back tiny dog like himself.
He loves to be held even though he will scatter away from you at first. Once you get him, he leans into you and looks up with so much trust and love in his eyes. We are looking for someone who wants to ultimate lap dog.
We would love to find someone to give Scruffy a more elegant name - Xavier was being discussed this am as fitting for him. As his coat grows out and he overall becomes healthier, he's showing more of the elegant poodle and less of the "I'm lost in this big crowd of poodles" kind of guy.
What is my personality like? Scruffy's full personality has not yet emerged. He is showing us some sides to him, but I don't think we will ever see fully what he can become until he has a person devoted just to him. What we see so far is a very tiny dog who thinks the world is too big and is looking for a strong set of shoulders to ride on, someone to take care of him and let him become all he can be without worrying about being stepped on or trampled by other dogs and so very big people.
Scruffy is a very quiet dog. We've never head him bark. I am sure he can, but so far he chooses not to. I think he's waiting for that one special person who can truly hear him. He has also not, in the time we've had him, ever played with toys. I am not sure he's ever seen a toy.
How do I act when I first meet new people? Tentative at first. We will have to pick him up and put him in your arms and once that happens, he is a little nervous, but he starts to settle in. He needs carried - a lot.
Other tips and tidbits: Scruff's exact birthdate is 4/12/2018. Please note, he has not yet been exposed to cats. He has met very large dogs (the largest is a 100 lb golden retriever), medium dogs and small dogs and he's behaved the same with all of them. He does not appear to need dogs in his life but will also gladly share his life with them. We are restricting homes for Scruffy to only those with other tiny dogs in the home.
We're also looking for a home for Scruffy with only older, very considerate children. No kids under 13 please and preferably no kids in the home. He is just too small.
First preference will be given to work from home or take your dog to work situations or to someone who is retired and home with their dog.

House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule.
