Freckles Foundation & Animal Rescue

Foster Based

Freckles Foundation & Animal Rescue, founded in December of 2023, is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are a foster-based rescue with a volunteer network spanning across Maryland, DC, and Virginia. We are committed to creating awareness within the communities we serve and working towards the best interest of the animals in our care. It is not just about finding homes for pets in need but finding a home that is right for them.

Freckles Foundation works with shelters, other rescue groups, community organizations, and individuals to identify cats and dogs in need of rescue. Once in our care we provide these animals with necessary veterinary care and a loving, nurturing foster home until they are adopted. Cats and dogs receive vaccinations, preventatives, and spay/neuter (if age appropriate) prior to adoption. Our rescues are cared for in our network of volunteer foster homes and provided with food, shelter, socialization, training, and other necessary care while awaiting adoption.

We are funded solely by donations and adoption fees. We are 100% volunteer-based currently.

Freckles Foundation is actively seeking partnerships with veterinary practices, community groups, and local businesses to further our mission.

Adoption Process
Interested applicants must complete adoption application that is on our website. There is a different application for dogs and cats. If applicable, we will contact your veterinarian to ensure that your current/previous pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and well cared for. For renters, we’ll check with your landlord to verify applicable pet policies, and if you are adopting a dog – whether there are any size or breed restrictions. Once you have spoken to us about the pet you are interested in, and if you would like to continue with the adoption process, arrangements will be made for a virtual home visit. The purpose of the home visit is to ensure that the rescue animal will be living in a safe environment, as well as to support the adoption process. All members of the home must be present for this. Following reference check and virtual home visit, a meet and greet will be arranged. In most cases, meet and greets will be performed at the foster’s home. We require all members of the family to be present at the meet and greet. For adult dogs, we also require other dogs in the home to be present at the initial meeting to assess compatibility with the rescue. Note: We review applications in the order in which they are received. We focus on matching the right animal to the right family to ensure successful adoptions. Our goal is to place these pets into homes where they will be safe and loved forever. We require adopters to meet our adoptable pets in person, and therefore give preference to applicants in the Metro Washington, DC area, but will consider out of area adopters on a case-by-case basis. At the time of adoption, the following adoption fees will be required. Adopters must sign an adoption contract and pay all adoption fees and applicable deposits in full prior to taking possession of their new pet. Adopters are also required to provide a leash and martingale collar for dogs/puppies and a carrier for cats/kittens. Each animals’ adoption fee is listed on their online bio: ~Puppy (1 to 6 months): Range: $400-$750 ~Young/Adult Dog (7 months to 8 years): Range: $400-$750 ~Senior Dog (9 years and older): $350 ~One Kitten/Cat: $150-$300 ~Two Cats/Kittens: $275-$600 ~Senior cat: $150 ***Kittens under 16 weeks of age need to be adopted in pairs or into a home with another playful, young cat. Processing times from application to adoption is usually anywhere from 48 hours to a week, depending on availability of applicant and foster family.
Mission Statement
A kitten named Freckles, who was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), and a desire to help more at-risk cats and dogs find forever homes, were the catalyst that ignited Athena Reizakis to start Freckles Foundation & Animal Rescue. While our main mission is to place animals in need in loving homes, we also place a special emphasis on the “underdog.” We will not let age or a medical diagnosis, such as FIP or heartworm, be a barrier in giving that animal the chance at the life they so deserve.

Important: Information regarding adoptable pets is provided by the adopting organization and is neither checked for accuracy or completeness nor guaranteed to be accurate or complete. The health status and behavior of any pet found, adopted through, or listed on the WeRescue app are the sole responsibility of the adoption organization listing the same and/or the adopting party. See our Terms of Service for more information.
