About One Step Closer Animal Rescue

Founded in the director's own home, the organization started as a foster-based rescue, relying on a small but dedicated network of volunteers to open their homes and hearts to dogs in need. Every intake, adoption and late-night emergency was handled , with determination and love, laying the foundation for a rescue based on second chances. As the need grew, so did the rescue. The move into a kennel facility in 2016 marked a major milestone. The kennel was not perfect and needed major repairs. everyone pitched in, allowing more dogs to be saved, more structured care to be provided and a stronger presence in the community. year by year improvements were made allowing increased adoptions and a deeper impact. On Feb 11th 2026, a devastating fire tore through the kennel. Despite every effort six beloved dogs were lost. The loss was profound and felt deeply by the staff, volunteers and supporters. These dogs (Sarge, Fred, Scrappy, Anna, Fudge, Gizmo) were not just animals in care; they were known, loved and part of the rescue family. While we were in the midst of our pain a still grieving there was an incredible out pouring from the community of love and monetary donations that overwhelmed us. even in heartbreak the mission endures. Today the rescue is in the process of rebuilding. We are stronger, more determined and more committed than ever. With the support from the community we are working to create a safer more resilient space. This is not the end of our story it is the beginning of a new chapter. We continue to operate as a foster based rescue, while renting a small kennel and are prepping for the rebuild.
