About Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County
APL cares for thousands of cats and dogs every year in our shelter that prioritizes intake by sick, injured, and abused homeless cats and dogs. Each year 2,000 or more are adopted into new homes. APL is the regional leader in ending pet-overpopulation and we have decreased euthanasia rates in Sangamon County by 89.49% since the opening of our spay/neuter clinic in 2006. Our community services include providing free pet food to pet owners experiencing financial hardship (more than 17 tons in 2024), reuniting lost animals with their owners, our monthly low-cost vaccine clinic, discounted spay/neuter services, and adoption services. APL advocates for animals by working with local government officials to ensure fair and just treatment of all animals and by assisting in animal cruelty investigations. We provide humane education to the students of the Compass for Kids program, which provides academic, social, and emotional support to underserved children in Springfield District 186 schools. Volunteers regularly visit 6 area nursing homes with shelter animals to boost the morale of residents and to socialize shelter animals in preparation for adoption.
This shelter's adoptable pets aren't listed on WeRescue yet — visit their website or social media to meet the animals waiting for a home.
