About North Shore Animal League America, Inc.
North Shore Animal League America’s dedicated teams of professionals and volunteers provide every dog, cat, puppy and kitten we rescue with the care and enrichment they need to heal and thrive, so they’re ready to form lasting bonds of unconditional love. From the moment they arrive at our Port Washington campus, they’re surrounded by compassion — helping them heal, trust again and get ready to love and be loved. During our more than 80 years, we have rescued over 1.2 million animals from overcrowded shelters, puppy mills, natural disasters, and other emergencies. Our no-kill mission to Rescue, Nurture, Adopt and Educate drives the innovative, lifesaving programs we’ve developed as a leader of the no-kill movement. Every animal receives individualized attention from our volunteers, veterinary teams, trainers and groomers. Dogs are taken for multiple walks daily, play in supervised groups and enjoy the comfort of human connection. Cats stretch out and explore in free-roaming rooms where they receive socialization and enrichment. This unique setting allows adopters to discover their unique personalities. We give every animal the support, patience and love they need to become someone’s beloved companion. At North Shore Animal League America, rescue is just the beginning of a beautiful new life. Each adoption saves two lives – the one being adopted into a loving, responsible home, and the other we rescue to take its place. An ongoing lifesaving cycle. The Humane Relocation Program is at the core of our initiatives as it brings dozens of homeless dogs and cats to our Port Washington campus each week. This program alleviates overcrowding in municipal and other shelters to save animals who would otherwise be euthanized as a means of population control. Some international rescues are also conducted. We collaborate and support hundreds of animal shelters that participate in our national and international adoption campaigns such as Tour for Life, Global Pet Adoptathon and others. At times of natural disasters, our emergency responses are launched to bring supplies and remove homeless animals allowing the impacted shelters to address the needs of displaced community pets. Our humane education program, Mutt-i-grees Curriculum, was developed in partnership with Yale University School of the 21st Century. It has reached 5,000 schools, libraries, and other educational settings. The program bridges humane education with social emotional leaning empowering students to take action for animal rescue and adoption in their communities. Our Pet Health Centers veterinary hospital is one in 11 animal shelters in the US and Canada that is accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. The dedicated professional staff treat the shelter animals as well as community pets. The Community Outreach Center provides resources and education to address feral colonies of cats. We provide spay/neuter along with vaccinations and medical exams to cats brought in by community members. Any cats that show signs of being adoptable are channeled to the feline behavior team for development until they are adoptable. SpayUSA provides vouchers for low-cost spay/neuter service providers to reduce the numbers of unwanted pregnancies. We support other shelters by providing use of our Mobile Adoption Units (shelter of wheels) to conduct community adoption events at busy locations. Additionally, during national adoption campaigns we facilitate their social media and broadcast media exposure.
