About The Humane Society of Hobart, Inc.
The Humane Society of Hobart (HSH) is a non-profit animal shelter holding a municipal contract with The City of Hobart, Indiana. HSH has been serving the community since 1954. In 2018, HSH answered the call from the community to save more lives, improve quality of care, and provide excellent customer service to pets and people in our area. One year later HSH moved from a 67% live release rate in 2016 and 2017 to an astounding 98.9% live release rate in 2019 and has maintained no-kill status since. HSH did so by completing an organizational health assessment, adhering to the Five Freedoms, providing medical services and vaccinations, working in partnership with area stakeholders, and adopting a compassionate mission to build and strengthen pet families. HSH recognizes the animal human bond as a means of reciprocating joy, stress relief, and health benefits for both the pet and the person. HSH recognizes the magnificent relationships that are built by caring for and owning a pet. HSH recognizes the benefits pets bring into our lives and the common bond shared between pet owners. HSH values inclusivity, transparency, and a public facing approach to animal welfare and pet family services. HSH builds pet families by providing shelter and adoptions to stray pets from our jurisdiction and transfer partners. HSH strengthens pet families through our lifesaving pet family programs which provide pet family resources and services to our community. HSH believes when you help pets, you help their people. Our programs are designed to keep pet families together, pets out of the shelter and fill a veterinary/pet resource financial gap in household income that can be used elsewhere in the family’s budget to offset food scarcity or provide utility support. Project H.O.P.E (The Helping Our Pets Effect) provides pet food and supplies, community veterinary clinics, veterinary wellness services, trap/neuter/release of community and feral cats, pet resources, affordable spay/neuter, crisis foster care, pet deposit fees provision, and human social service referral to pet families in need in Lake County, Indiana. The Homeward Bound Program has a 50% return rate for lost dogs in our community through the public microchipping program, facial recognition program, lost pet social media page, and return in field service policies. The Cattin’ Around Town Program provides TNVR (trap, neuter, vaccinate, return) services to residents of Hobart. The Mom and Puppy Program provide free spay/neuter services to residents of Northwest Indiana. Lifesavers of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome to volunteer with HSH! The HSH volunteer program saves the lives of both people and pets and is the backbone of our success. HSH has an annual intake of 2,500 pets in need which is the highest stray intake in a five-county area in Northwest Indiana. HSH has gained fiscal strength since 2018 with a multi-channel fundraising, development, and marketing plan that optimizes the contributions and support of an integrated group of stakeholders. Supporting The Humane Society of Hobart is a direct investment in Lake County pet families, public health and safety, and the creation of humane, sustainable pet communities. Join us on a mission to build and strengthen pet families!
